A dental cleaning procedure is a basic dental treatment which involves the scaling and planning of tooth surface, to remove adherent plaque and calculus. Patients are encouraged to visit their dentists twice a year or every six months for teeth cleaning; but it may be more frequent for those who have gum problems so that some improvement can be offered to the patient and health can be restored to the teeth and gums.

Those who do not understand will regard teeth cleaning as unnecessary. They clean their teeth at home and they believe that they do a good job of taking care of their teeth so spending for a dental cleaning is excessive. So why should you bother going to the dentist for a dental cleaning? Is it really an excessive practice? To gain a better appreciation of the value scheduling regular dental cleaning, look at the following points:

  1. a) It helps maintain good oral health condition. A person can only declare himself healthy when he is physically, mentally and socially fit. Your oral health condition is deemed perfect when its function is not compromised in any way. When you are able to smile, eat, speak and enjoy the full function of your teeth, then you can be truly satisfied. One is able to maintain optimum oral health condition by scheduling regular teeth cleaning with their dentists because together, the dentist and the patient form a perfect partnership.
  2. b) It develops a good habit. Many children are taken to the dentists for the first time, for tooth extraction, and traumas are born this way. By making sure to see your dentist for regular cleaning, you start a good habit that any individual can carry up to the next years of their lives.
  3. c) It supports your personal efforts at home. Everyone is encouraged to observe proper oral hygiene practices at home. Brushing, flossing and rinsing is very crucial to the maintenance of oral health, but they are not enough. There are areas in the mouth that tooth brushes, floss and mouthwashes are not able to tackle, but the dental scalers are able to. By making it a point to visit your dentist twice a year, you double your chance of avoiding disease.
  4. d) It prevents disease. Plaque accumulates in the mouth on a daily basis. When it is allowed to collect it brings about gum disease and dental caries, which can lead to dental infection and a number of different problems.
  5. e) It helps the patient avoid other dental treatments. Plaque may be the causative factor for gum disease, but it does not stop there because when the health condition of the mouth is not monitored, you do not only risk suffering gum disease, but the cascading effects will demand so much more from you. Progressive gum disease can lead to bone loss and tooth extraction, which will require expensive bone grafting procedures or the need for dentures, dental bridges and implants.
  6. f)    It detects problems, earlier on. As sad as it sounds, some patients only remember their dentists when there is a pressing problem; otherwise, they would not be compelled to see their dentist at all. When you schedule regular teeth cleaning with your dentist, you get a trained eye looking into the condition of your mouth on a regular basis. If any signs of disease (dental or otherwise) manifest in the mouth, the dentist will be able to bring your attention to it.

They always say prevention is nine-tenths of the cure. In other words, by making a commitment to pay attention to disease prevention, you offer yourself protection from disease so you do not have to go through the pain and discomfort that comes with it. At first glance, a dental cleaning will not seem so important, but when you begin to understand what it can really do for your teeth and for your smile, you will be more than willing to make a good habit of it.
